Ever had a garage sale?

I hate garage sales.  Having them I mean.  I love going to them - getting bargains, laughing at what people manage to end up owning (I'm one to talk).  I'm not a haggler though which is part of the attraction for a lot of people, it's just not me.  Anyway.  I'm getting ready to have one with the gentle push and encouragement of my sister.  She's bringing some of her junk, I mean items too.  We have a lot of stuff in my house that I will never use.
I have finally accepted the fact that I won't be doing any paper crafting, wreath making, knitting.  Just not my cup of tea and saving the supplies will not change that.
Saving boxes of books isn't better than throwing them in the recycle box.  I would donate them to our local library but for some reason, they toss a good majority of the books that are donated.  Also, having paid for a book doesn't mean I'm going to read it and having really enjoyed a book doesn't mean I will read it again or that I need to keep it.
Family game night is a distant fantasy.  I will not get my kids to stay home long enough for a game of monopoly so I might as well give it up.
Once my CDs are on my computer (and backed up)  there's not much point in saving them.  Thus it follows that I don't need the big clunky CD holder either.

Just because I like a pair of shoes, that doesn't mean I will wear them and it definitely doesn't make them comfortable.
Do we really need to save all those records?  Oops, John says we do.
How many coffee mugs does one household need really?

Anyways, the long and the short of it is that I don't need a lot of this stuff but I can't bear to throw it out.  I would give it to friends, but I don't have any.  I seriously considered sending it to people I've met on line but the postage costs are prohibitive.  I feel compelled to at least try and sell it before I donate it so that's what I'm going to do.  Getting it all together seemed like an insurmountable job but I read somewhere to keep your goals small so I'm getting one set together per day.  Books one day - done, Games one day - done and so on.  This means that my dining room is being taken over but the job is getting done and the dining room stacks are temporary.  The other bit of advice I got there (it was a Zen website) was to concentrate on the benefits I would have when the work is done instead of the difficulties of the process, that's helping too.  We haven't set a date yet but I will keep you posted (no pun intended).

  1. Yard sales are hard work. Hopefully you will get rid of alot and makes some $$. It is good to declutter and get rid of what you dont use. I have done so lately but I have a tendency to want to save all kinds of things..... Records...you know people make neat bowls by melting them...mmmm maybe your hubbie likes records more than bowls. Hope you have a great day! Hugs, Kim
